From New Moon to Full Moon – all phases at a glance.
The moon calendar tracks the lunar cycle — the 29.5-day journey the Moon takes through its eight phases: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent. The calendar calculates the current phase based on the precise angular distance between the Moon and Sun as seen from Earth.
The New Moon marks a new cycle — the Moon is between Earth and Sun, invisible from our perspective. As the Moon moves eastward, the illuminated portion grows (waxing) until the Full Moon. Then it shrinks (waning) back to New Moon. Each phase has traditionally been associated with planting, harvesting, and rest cycles in agricultural cultures worldwide.
Full moons occur approximately every 29.5 days. The moon calendar above shows the current phase and the precise date and time of the next Full Moon in your local timezone. There are typically 12–13 full moons per year — when two occur in the same calendar month, the second is called a Blue Moon.
Research published in Current Biology found that around the full moon, participants took 5 minutes longer to fall asleep and slept 20 minutes less on average, even in controlled conditions. The proposed mechanism is moonlight suppressing melatonin, though the effect size is small and not universal.
Biodynamic gardening practices sow seeds during the Waxing Moon and harvest or prune during the Waning Moon. The practice has roots in ancient agricultural traditions and is still used by organic farmers today. Scientific evidence remains limited, but many growers report consistent results following lunar cycles.
